EXP 2 Final Submission

Strategy Statement:

For assignment 2 we were required to model a building (I chose Church Of Light) and demonstrate how it would decay/fail 100 years after humans had left earth. I used 3ds Max for modelling and (with no prevail) Cry engine to represent the building in the environment of our EXP1 Island.

My entire EXP2 experience had been awful, I was faced with error after error, after error. Ended up re-modelling the Church of Light 3 times and still had no success. Upon bringing anything into Cry engine I would be faced with a 'Build Error', An XML error about materials and more. My tutor Rose fixed most my errors at UNI however upon finishing I made a few more changes to my model and textures which caused endless amounts of trouble. I was no longer able to import into cry engine, and my folders even started disappearing.

In the end all I can show is my model in 3ds with textures and the structure decay/failing. I will provide my full SDK folder to get an idea of the errors I was faced with.

Moving on, my plan was to portray the church of life post earthquake, with destruction of the concrete and reinforcements becoming visible through the crumbling walls, as well as having a large tree piercing the building. I also created cracks and holes in the glass elements of the church and rusted the mullions holding the windows together. The church floor was timber, so I applied a rotten timber texture to it, and the surrounding furniture with moss. The furniture within the building was to present the notion of human life, I was also wanting to incorporate various tools/equipment within the immediate landscape. My plan was to also create an interactive crumble of the wall (you can see in the photos below - the one that is rotated out of place).

EXP 2 - Week Six Tasks

Lecture Reflection:

The focus of this weeks lecture was textures and how to present them within our project to emphasise the notion of decay. The tides in architecture and gaming are changing and the shift from 2d to 3d has and will continue to revolutionise the industry.

EXP 2 - Week Five tasks

Five movie Trailers for Inspiration:

Transformers 4 Trailer - Transformers Age of Extinction

I chose this trailer because of the audio work. The audio creates that extra illusion where you feel like you are there and involved with everything that's going on. Definitely going to attempt this for my trailer.

Godzilla 2014 - Trailer

I really like the way this trailer creates a progressive build up to something big, and leaves you guessing.

Fast and Furious 6 Trailer

This trailer shows a lot of destruction of both buildings and the environment, which is inspiring, how ever it is the cinematography that I really enjoy in this film trailer

World War Z - Trailer

I really like the plot in this film it goes well with the idea behind benv2423, this will definitely play a roll in my trailer for this subject.

Inception Trailer

I love everything about this movie, the plot, visuals, audio. This trailer will also shape the way my benv trailer turns out.

Lecture Reflection:

This weeks lecture was based around movie trailers and ways on how to show traces of human life. The trailers definitely helped inspire me for my own movie trailer, as well as to start to think about ways to represent human traces.

Progression on Decay:

Steel Reinforcements still in development

Lecture Reflection:

This weeks lecture was on destruction - Both naturally and man made. We got to watch movies of buildings collapsing to demonstrate how buildings do fail over time and what they would look like, so we can attempt to replicate that destruction.

Progress:

Spent this week remodelling the church of light. Began modelling in Revit and linking it into 3ds max

Materials:

Concrete - Concrete is a material created by combining an aggregate (usually sand, gravel or crushed stone), with a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. There are a number of variations which will affect the life span of concrete,  maintenance, and environmental factors to name a few. Modern buildings are typically engineered to last 60+ years.

Concrete degradation can have various causes, concrete can be damaged by fire, aggregate expansion, sea water effects, bacterial corrosion, calcium leaching, physical damage and chemical damage.

Concrete has a number of positives, including, durability, easy to maintain, versatile, long lasting. Some of the negatives include, uncomfortable, cold, moisture, environmentally unfriendly.

Concrete is generally used for floor slabs and walls.

Glass -

Glass is manufactured by melting sand, soda ash, dolomite and limestone together. Glass doesn't decompose, it takes a very long time to become a solid. Some types of glass can be made to decompose by adding chemicals similar to what etching does to glass. Glass takes thousands of years to become a solid.

Glass have a number of pros and cons, some pros including, visibility, lightweight, easy to manufacture. Some cons include, fragile, lack of temperature control. Glass is typically used for windows to let extra natural light in.

Steel -

When manufacturing steel, impurities such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, and excess carbon are removed from the raw iron, and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce different grades of steel.

Steel much like concrete lasts a very long, however factors like maintenance and environmental factors can play a role in the lifespan of steel. Steel provide many pros and some cons, some pros include, cost effectiveness, resilient to the elements, termites and some natural disasters, steel is actually lighter than wood. Cons include, special tools are required to work with steel,  conductor to heat, mold.

Steel is typically used for the framing within a building.

Lecture Reflection:

In this weeks lecture we looked back upon some of our fellow class mates EXP1 submissions and was given a run down on the good and bad things about some trailers. We were also given a briefing on materials like concrete and there purpose.

EXP 2 - Week One Tasks

3DS Max to Cry Engine

Final:

Lecture reflection:

This week was the introduction of EXP2, we were given a run down on the marking criteria, shown examples of previous years work, and given quick talk about possible buildings to choose from. We are representing this building 100 years after human existence and showing how the building will fail/decay.

Week 6 - Final Submission

Trailer:

Strategy Statement:

An island previously submerged underwater has resurfaced off the coast of Madagascar.  The island only resurfaces once a year for 24 hours only on September 9th. Can the crew of explorers figure out the puzzle of the islands appearance and disappearance before they become trapped as the island re submerges for another year.

There are a number of Subliminal messages the island portrays ranging from micro to macro.

  • The island has 9 Large jungle tree's which at just the right point in time will cast 9 shadows upon a giant cliff face.
  • 9 Camping tents from previous explorers now deceased lay still intact on the edge of the island.
  • 9 Tree's on top of a giant hill visible from a very far distance stand strong.
  • An 'S' Shaped rock on the giant cliff face becomes visible and invisible at certain times in the day when shadows are cast perfectly.
  • Various vegetation including groups of Mushrooms are shaped as the letter 'S

Lecture Reflection:

This week we looked into how we would present our island through the trailer emphasising the subliminal messages - in my case "S9". We were shown a number of trailers to build some inspiration. As well as the introduction of "flow graphs" to hide the interface settings etc in game mode.

Mushrooms set in the shape of the letter S

Lecture Reflection:

This week we looked into subliminal messaging and how to appropriately incorporate them into our island and trailer. Most of this weeks lecture was showing ways to represent these messages.

Lecture Reflection:

Environmental elements such as rain and fog were addressed this lecture, we were shown examples of them and how to implement them into the island. These will make for some great effects in our trailers.
